—room (2021).

The room is an environment of screens. The room is a performance. The room has a stage and a “back-of-house.” The room is where work life and social life converge. The room is a place for play and social interaction. The room of one’s own is the room of all. The room is public and private. The room exists between architecture and furniture. The room is a universal idiosyncrasy. The room is a real virtuality. The room is a mass-produced singularity. The room’s latent dispositions are the origin of its abstractions: the room is open.

—room catalogues the mutants, hybrids, and chimeras that have arisen in response to the latest state of exception. This strange menagerie is catalogued in plan drawings submitted by students and practicing architects at Yale and beyond. These drawings show accidental assemblages of professional and domestic activity, which both contradict and conform to contemporary speculations on the relationship between home and work. —room argues that these new arrangements, assembled by necessity rather than designed with intention, are a message from the future of architectural production. The exhibition —room took place in the Yale School of Architecture North Gallery from February 12 to March 12, 2021.
